Classy Cyrname sinks Altior at Ascot

As Cyrname conducted out a dazzling all-the-way victor in the Christy 1965 Chase at Ascot altior suffered his first defeat.
Unbeaten at 19 previous starts over fences and obstacles combined, Nicky Hendersons dual Queen Mother Champion Chase hero Altior was the rage to make it 20 wins on the spinalong with his army of supporters moved a heavily-supported 1-3 favourite away.
The Paul Nicholls-trained Cyrname ended last year after two wins over distance and this course – as the chaser at Britain – 1lb above Altior, but was simple to back in 5-2.
With the only other runner Solomon Grey never a variable, it was a two-horse race from off the street, with Harry Cobden sending Cyrname straight to the lead along with Nico de Boinville sitting on his tail aboard Altior, who had been racing over further than just two and a quarter miles to the very first time.
It was Cyrname who produced the slicker jumps as the pace increased hurrying down the back right – and De Boinville had been the two riders more animated until the home turn.
Altior did his very best to bridge the gap at the straight, but Cyrname refused to let up and a two-and-a-quarter-length success was sealed by a jump in the weapon.
